Clinical effects of Tenoxicam in Degenerative and Rheumatoid arthritis



Abstract
Tenoxicam is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug of the oxicam class, with good bio-availability and a half life of 72 hours which permits once daily administration. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory efficacy, tolerance and safety of the newly developed tenoxicam in 40 cases of degenerative arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients was evaluated during 6 months from April to October, 1988. The following results were obtained:
1) According to the diagnosis, degenerative arthritis were 20 cases (50%) and rheumatoid arthritis were 20 cases (50%).
2) Among 40 cases, male were 7 cases (17.5%) and female were 33 cases (82.5%), the highest inc.dence was between 61 to 70 years old in degenerative arthritis and between 51 to 60 years old in rheumatoid arthritis.
3) There was marked improvement in global condition, pain on movement, pain at night and stiffness. 4) Four patients experienced six cases of side effect, including 2 cases of indigestion and swelling each cases of abdominal pain and diarrhea.
5) Seventeen cases (85%) showed good result in degenerative arthritis and 13 cases (65%) showed good result in rheumatoid arthritis.
6) There was no significant difference in laboratory values before and after treatment.
In conclusion, tenoxicam is very effective and safe for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative arthritis but more effective in degenerative arthritis. Side effects are few and generally mild.
